ARTIST STATEMENT

Social and political upheavals, security and invasion, recreation and industry underpin the complex relationship between humanity and the natural world in romantic traditions of marine painting. JMW Turner painted the ocean as a stage for human drama and action, themes redolent of man's helpless struggle against the power of nature. Marine recuperates a rich history of the sublime in painting compressing image, space, memory, and light into a single view. Here the sea is a screen for the aging destroyer class of American warships in a carrier battle group. Taken from naval publicity photographs the work focuses on contemporary symbols of violence in the landscape.
