through the social, economic and psychological tobacco terrain of North Carolina with
a native whose great-grandfather created the "Bull Durham" brand. "Bright Leaves" is
a subjective, autobiographical mediation on the allure of cigarettes and their troubling
legacy for North Carolina. It's about loss and preservation, addiction and denial.

McElwee has made seven feature-length documentaries including Time Indefinite
and Sherman's March, which has won numerous awards, including Best Documentary
at the Sundance Film Festival.
