My work is a constant evaluation of the incomprehensible visual intricacy that an urban organism produces. The density and scope of intentionally and unintentionally arranged matter is magnificent. Like fractals, the in-between spaces of this man-made network are microscopic versions of the larger ones.

While the influence for the work comes from the city, the inspiration for the work is in the process itself. I cut out spaces between the ordered lines of pre-fabricated graph paper. Since nothing is more perfect than a manufactured grid, no matter how regulated my approach to cutting out patterns, it will always be imperfect. I liken the process to a sped up version of the erosion that takes place in a city. It is the human touch on a piece of grid paper, or the weathering of a row home that creates visual interest and contrast. Both are reminders that beauty is not selective, but encompasses the spectrum of perfect to imperfect.
