These abstract drawings are based on insect patterns, from the objects they create such as hives, nests, and webs, to the patterns of marks found on their bodies. I am obsessively precise in my markmaking to better imitate their acts of creation. I have chosen to give significance to objects in nature that are often deemed unworthy of notice, using them to create aesthetically pleasing images. The 6”x 6” size of these pieces simultaneously speaks about the diminutive objects that I abstract and demands a sense of intimacy. I want the viewer to get close enough to the pieces to see the intricate detail of marks, the precision of the lines, and the vivid colors of the ink and acrylic paint. Much like a look at a wasp’s nest or spider’s web, close inspection of these drawings reveals objects that could only be created through a tedious, labored process. |
