This is one of two pieces, Up Quark and Down Quark, that are the first of a series of small metalworks referencing the six main types of quarks: Up, Down, Truth (Top), Beauty (Bottom), Strange, Charm. Quarks reside within subatomic particles and are part of the ambiguous and controversial science of particle physics. For me, an avid reader who eschews fiction, studying this world of black holes, antimatter and cosmic rays is the perfect combination of reality and fantasy. I have been mining this topic for several years in paintings that rely on glitter and metal foils to evoke an unseeable world. To introduce dimensionality to this topic this series uses jewelry techniques and metals. Each piece consists of a metal field that is scribed with historic images from particle accelerators and then patinaed to produce a rich surface available only from this process. Interestingly, patinas are chemical mixtures that produce an effect by aggressively exchanging electrons with the metal. Removable, wearable jewelry sculptures that describe the language of quarks mount to the background. In this set the Up and Down quarks are expressed by hammered silver discs that can be worn as a brooch or pendant.
