Eilis Crean

My work is embedded in introspection and interpretation of my personal experience and the transformation of that through the act of painting. Contemplation, phenomenological being, cultural picturing and the presence of witness are key components as I seek to create work that connects with spiritual, concrete, psychological, sociological and personal aspects of my life.

Portraiture is simultaneously present and separate. As descriptive and meta-narrative, it gathers memory and history in a mediated exchange between two people proxy to the experience of direct encounter. Painting is an impulse for documentation of gesture as primal communication in the stage of cultural narrative. These sequence portraits reference time as the temporal backdrop to experience.
