Space: Relative or Obsolute 2, 2008
acrylic and ink on wood, ten 1" cubes

For a number of years I have been attempting to make transformative energy visible in the form of paintings, sculptures and installations. This particular exploration began with the title, Space: Relative or Absolute? and the image of a nebula as photographed via satellite.

As I began to consider this question of space it became clear that the visual form of the work should be a malleable one. Then the surface to be painted was selected; a grouping of one inch square blocks. On one side of each block I painted a representational image of the nebula. Then each block was turned and a new expression of that space was explored. Next the blocks were turned again and yet another point of view explored. Each of the six sides on the blocks can be arranged to form a small painting on a grid format. They may also be arranged in a number of other ways, combining to create unforeseen spatial constructs.
